Two Harvard Students to Compete In Annual Boston Marathon Grind

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Two Harvard students will compete with more than 200 foreign and American stars in the colorful Boston Marathon tomorrow. Seniors James J. Pates, Jr. and William H. Chrisman, 2nd will enter the event for the second and third times respectively. Chrisman placed 88th and Pates 99th in last year's Marathon.

In preparation for the grueling affair, Chrisman entered the Brighton Read Race and finished 40th in a strong field of more than 100. Pates placed 84th in the 10 1/2 mile Cathedral Run in South Boston.

The Marathon affords several distractions for the runners. Besides the Wellesley students who traditionally show up on masse at the course's half-way point, an additional 750,000 spectators are expected to line the whole route.

No Harvard man has ever won a medal by finishing in the top 35. Both Chrisman and Pates were reluctant to comment.

Survivors of the run are served beef stew and orange juice in the locker room.
