Ken Rossano and Bob Kessler limited the M.I.T. baseball team to four hits in a chilly 6 to 0 shutout yesterday at Soldiers Field. The Engineers were unable to get a man past first as the varsity took its first home game and brought the season record to three wins and one loss.
Rossano went the first seven innings and allowed all four hits, all singles. He struck out five and walked none. Finishing up, Kessler walked one, but struck out two.
The Crimson threatened in the first inning when Tech's starting pitcher Alan Hauser walked three men, but the first runs did not come till the second, when the Crimson scored four times.
Bob Hastings started the drive on a single to left with one out. Then Rossano walked, and Hastings scored when Dick Hoffman lined a single to right field.
John Simourian doubled to right scoring Rossano, and Hoffman tallied the third run when Don Butters grounded to short. Captain George MacDonald singled home Simourian for the final run of the inning.
The Crimson scored again in the third when Matt Botsford singled to center, went to second on a wild pitch and came home on Hoffman's single to right. The final run came in the next inning against relief pitcher Gif Weber when Botsford doubled home Dick Fisher.
Weber hold the varsity scoreless the rest of the way, but Rossano and Kessler matched his effort.
