Cambridge police towed 21 cars and three motorcycles away from the vicinity of the square yesterday in a new drive to clear the streets of illegally parked vehicles.
Some of the cars were not registered, and others have been parked in the same spot since September, said Police captain Patrick J. McCarthy. "We will continue to row cars away until drivers begin to follow regulations," he said.
Most of the ears towed away come from Riverview, Plympton, and South streets and a large percentage had out of state licensers, McCarthy said. "I think that these cars belong to University students because they don't come from Massachusetts," he continued.
There are about 80 cars which have been ticketed over eight times. "The law states that we can tow out of state cars away after they have been ticketed twice, and the operator does not answer the tickets.' McCarthy said, "and we intend to crack down on this regulation."
Police tow all cars to Ellery garage, 418 Broadway, but in order to pick up their cars, operators must first report to the Cambridge Police Station. Police require this so that they can take down addresses of the city's elusive out of state violators.
