Bob Pickett finished the best of his five seasons as varsity wrestling coach in New Haven Saturday, but it was not good enough to keep Yale from doing what it has done every since 1935. The Eli won again this time crushing a favored crimson 20 to 6.
"But you don't anywhere talking about jinxes," Pickett said. "That sounds like an excuse and there wasn't any. They had a better team than we had thought, and we were a little overanxious."
Team Takes Two Decisions
The crimson salvaged only two decisions, at 137 and 157, as the Blue scored on two pins, 123 and unlimited, and four decisions.
Phil Burnaman squeaked a 8 to 2 time advantage from Roland Molinet to remain undefeated at 37, and unbeaten sophomore Bob Gilmore, shifting from 167 to 157, scored the crimson's only other points, on a 4 to 0 decision.
But Pickett's other lineup changes were less successful. Sophomore Casper cronk, replacing Gilmor at 167, lost a 5 go 0 decision and Ed Keating, moving up to 130, was decisioned, 7 to 2. Phil Herrera, who dropped from 130 to 123, was pinned in 2:25.
The Blue took its second fall when Bob Wynne (unlimited) was pinned in the second period, after leading on points 5 to 2. Mike Murray (147) was shut out 6 to 0, and Ken Culbert (177) lost to John Kousi for the second time in two years, in a battle of captains.
Meanwhile, the Yardlings closed their season in a 14 to 14 tie with the puppies.
