Informal Plan Aiding Kamin Raises $1800

Informal fund-raising for Leon J. Kamin '49, former research assistant in Social Relations, has netted more than $1,800 since his indictment three months ago for contempt of Congress.

Richard L. Solomon, associate professor of Social Psychology, said yesterday that, in addition to this sum, Kamin has also received a few contributions directly in Montreal, where he is now a research assistant in Psychology at McGill University.

The money raised so far, however, falls very short of the amount which will probably prove necessary to meet Kamin's legal expenses. Fund raisers for Wendell H. Furry, associate professor of Physics, whose case is very similar to Kamin's, this week estimated Furry's expenses might reach $15,000.

More Efforts Necessary

Emphasizing that all the money collected up to now has been solicited informally, Solomon said more fund-raising efforts will be necessary, but exactly what form the campaign will take must wait for more definite results of the informal drive.

further efforts, however, will not include a circular letter to University faculty members, he said, although "some inquiries about possible outside contributors have been made." Even though the same issues of academic freedom are involved in both cases, he said, the fact that Kamin is no longer a member of the University precludes such a general appeal.
