Cambridge Races Oxford Today in English Classic

Two Harvard alumni will be the first Americans ever to row together in the 101-year-old Oxford-Cambridge race this afternoon on the Thames. Phil DuBois '53 and Robert A. G. Monks '54 will pull for Cambridge against a favored Oxford eight.

DuBois, who weighs 185 and stands 6 ft., 4 in, with Monks, 191 and 6 ft. 5 in., is typical of the Cambridge crew, which averages 189 and 6 ft., 1/2 in.

It is this rugged actin which river experts point to as a handicap on the choppy water predicted for the four miles, 400 yard course from Putney to Mortlake.

In a recent try-out, however, Cambridge equalled the 1938 record of 3:37 for the 1600 yards from Chiswick Steps to Hammersmith Bridge. But Oxford turned in an excellent 4:10 to set a record for the mile row to Putney Bridge and chop five seconds from the best times of Cambridge crews in 1911 and 1937.
