New Divinity Aid Program Seeks $48,000

The Divinity School is seeking an increase of at least $48,000 in its scholarship aid program, Acting Dean George H. Williams announced yesterday.

The proposed enlargement of the present scholarship fund of $7,500 is designed to provide for the School's intended enrollment expansion to 300 students.

The expansion program will be inaugurated next fall when probably three of the proposed 24 new scholarships will be awarded. An applicant will be selected from each of three specific categories listed in the plan.

Two of the fellowships are valued at $1,500, with one for study towards the S.T.B. and the other for graduate work beyond the Bachelor of Divinity degree. The recipient of the third award, which is worth $3,500, will be chosen from "mature men, including Christian leaders from Europe, Africa, and Asia."

Recipients to Give Courses

This third fellowship, intended for post-doctoral research, also proposes to supplement the school's curriculum with specialized courses, probably in seminar form, to be given by each of its recipients.

The overall enlargement provides for six of these research scholarships, six graduate awards, and 12 for men working for the regular Bachelor of Divinity degree.

Dean Liston Pope of the Yale Divinity School, commented last night that the proposed scholarship is similar to Yale's present system and would be more than adequate for Harvard's intended enrollment increase.
