The varsity mile relay team sped to a new University record in Saturday night's Millrose games, but its time of 3:19.5 was only good for a third place behind Morgan State and Villanova.
Captain Bob Rittenburg jumped to a quick lead in the opening leg of the relay, but Morgan State went ahead before he could pass the baton to Dick Wharton.
Wharton and Rennie Little held off Villanova and Cornell to keep the Crimson in contention up to the final hand off. But anchor man Dave Alpers' excellent 49 second quarter mile was not sufficient to catch Morgan State or to withstand Villanova's amazing Olympic prospect, Charlie Jenkins, who passed Alpers giving Villanova second place.
The previous University mile relay record established last year, was 3:20.6, more than a second behind the new mark.
