Navy broke the varsity squash team's 23-match winning streak Saturday at Annapolis, defeating the Crimson, 7 to 2. the last intercollegiate defeat for the Crimson was also at Annapolis, Feb.14 1953, by 5 to 4.
The varsity had to win the top three matches to have any chance of winning, for the evenly-balanced Middies were generally conceded the bottom three matches.
But Middle number one, Myron Ricketts, upset Bon Hecksher, 7-15, 15-12, 10-15, 15-11, 15-14, in the tightest match of the day. The loss was Hocksher's second in four days, as he lost to former world champion Henri Salaun Thursday in the finals of the state championship.
At two, Navy captain Chuck Smith beat captain Bill Wister in straight sets, 15-12, 15-10, 15-17, and in the number three match Tom Lynch, topped Guy Paschal, 15-7, 7-15, 15-9, 1513.
Bob Brown, four, and Cal Place, five, were the only Crimson winners. Brown took Don Clark, 3 to 2, and Place beat Bill Van Allen, 15-8, 15-11, 17-16.
The Crimson plays Princeton, the top team in the East, there, next Saturday. Before exams, the Tigers gave Navy its only defeat this season, 6 to 3. The same day, the Yardlings will play at Exeter.
