The varsity mile relay team will face its stiffest competition of the season tonight when Captain Bob Rittenberg, Dick Wharton, Renny Little, and Dave Alpers will meet the nation's best quarter-milers in the Millrose Games at Madison Square Garden.
Villanova, Morgan State, and Cornell will oppose the Crimson and all three have turned in blistering times for the mile distance. Morgan State's 3:19.4 and Villanova's 3:19.6 both exceed the University record of 3:20.6 established last year. Cornell, while its times have not been so impressive as the varsity's other two opponents, has a very strong team, with the potential to win.
Once again much of the team's chances will hinge on the condition of anchor-man Dave Alpers. Alpers, who has been plagued with a back injury during most of the season, will be running with the added handicap of a stubborn cold. If Alpers can still turn in times such as the 48.4 effort which sealed last year's record relay, the team may well outdistance its rivals, and such nationally recognized stars as Villanova's speedster Charlie Jankins.
