Unbeaten Varsity Swimmers Meet Strong Midshipmen Here Tonight

By L. THOMAS Linden

Two unbeaten Crimson swimming teams, not yet faced with serious opposition, take their initial plunges against strong pool competition today.

The varsity meets once-beaten Navy here tonight in the I. A. B. at 8:30 p.m., and the freshmen troop to the Phillips Exeter Acadamy for an afternoon contest at 3 p.m. The Yardlings face the relatively stronger foe.

The Midshipmen come to Cambridge for their second meet in two days, having lost to an equally strong Dartmouth team, 44 to 40, in a close and taxing meet at the Winter Carnival in Hanover yesterday.

Navy had previously won five straight, topping Virginia, Pittsburg, Bainbridge Naval Training Station, Columbia, and Pennsylvania. These victims, however, are not the most powerful available.

But the Naval Academy brings with it six strong swimmers. Hawaiian Chuck Gray, its free-styling sprinter, covers the 100 in 52.5 and the 220 in 2:12.5. Jack Edwards and Chouteau Dyer haven't swum the former event as fast yet this season for the Crimson, while Jim Jorgensen and Captain Ted Whatley, who both went the longer distance in only slightly better time against Cornell; will again be pushed to peak performance.

Paul Slack, Navy's best all-around swimmer, does the individual medley in 1:36 flat, which may be more than the varsity's Pete Macky and Dick Stenson can match. Slack specializes in the 50-yard sprint, however, and his 24-second time will require the Crimson's Stu Ogden and Gus Johnson to produce better clockings than they have so far this year if they intend to beat him.

The 200-yard orthodox breast stroke matches of this year's two team-record breakers. The Middies' Jerry Nay set a new Academy mark this season with a 2:37.9. This figure will force the Crimson's Sigo Falk to reproduce his own varsity record of 2:36.6, which he set in his last meet. John Fowler will probably swim with Falk in this event tonight, since Bill Hoadley, Falk's running mate to date, is nursing a virus.

The freshmen, who through a Christmas skiing accident lost the services of their ace free styler for the season, travel to Exeter without the man who was to take his place. The Hygiene Department has benched Dave Harper for two weeks with a virus
