The strength and speed of Springfield's middle-weight wrestlers edged the varsity into its second loss of the season Saturday, 16 to 15. Weakened by injuries, the Crimson entries at 130, 137, and 147 were no match for Springfield's three New England small college champions and superior Crimson heavyweights could not overcome the deficit.
The close loss to the Gymnasts sheds little lights on the varsity's chances for beating Yale next Saturday for the first time in 20 years. The Eli fell 14 to 12 to Springfield in their first match of the season.
Keating Wins
In Saturday's match Ed Keating (123) managed a 7 to 5 decision over Ed Amerantes for the varsity's only win below the 167 class. Bob Gilmor (167) pinned champion Bill Bock after 8:30 with a half Nelson body press in the best match of the day, and Captain Ken Culbert (177) took 3:15 to get Sid Hall into the reverse cradle and a pin.
But Springfield co-captin Don Stubblebine (130) pinned Bob Holmes, replacing Phil Andrews, after 6:34; Joe Alissi (137) decisioned Dave Jordan, who came off the sicklist to fill in four injured Phil Burnaman; and co-captained John Mulligan (147) took Mike Murray 6 to 0. George Harunk (157) rode Len Miller to a 5 to 0 victory.
In the final bout, Bob Wynne (unlimited) could not score against Springfield's Len Rivers, and the draw beat the Crimson by the point.
