Red China Expels 'Brainwashed' Graduate After Spy Imprisonment

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A Harvard graduate described a "thoroughly brainwashed" was one of two Americans released in Hong Kong yesterday after three and a half years detention by the Chinese Communists on spy charges.

Malcolm Bersohn '43, who for the three years prior to his arrest in 1951 had been studying at the Peiping Union Medical College, declared on his arrival in Hong Kong that he was "full of shame and remorse for his crime against the Communist people."

Ten days ago he was called before a Communist court and tried on espionage charges. He confessed, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to three and a half years imprisonment. Since he had already served that long, the was ordered expolled from the country.

Hong Kong newsmen who have met hundreds of expellees from Red China said Bersohn and Mrs. Adele Rickett, the other American released, were apparently "among the most thoroughly brainwashed to arrive here yet."

Mrs. Rickett, who was studying in China on a Fulbright Scholarship, was imprisoned with her husband on the same charges as Bersohn. Her husband is still in the Peiping Prison.

Lived in Adams

A resident of Adams House as an undergraduates, Bersohn does not appear to have left an impression on the Deans, Contacted last night, Crester A Hanford, professor of Government and previous Dean of the College, could think of nothing to single him out from other students.

In a letter received by his mother last week, Bersohn said he had been imprisoned as "a punishment for crime."

"The kind treatment and patient education given me is a part of the basic policy of the Chinese government towards Criminals," the letter added.
