Bill McCurdy's varsity track team meets a surprisingly strong Dartmouth squad today at Hanover in its final warm up for the Yale-Princeton meet Feb. 22. Last week the Indians gave heptagonal favorite Cornell a very close meet, losing by the creditable score of 64 1/2 to 44 1/2.
Dartmouth expects victories in the mile and the 1000, and McCurdy's distance men will have to better their past times if they are going to catch the Indians' Paul Merriman who completed the mile well under 4:30 against Cornell.
Dartmouth pole vaulters Lou Metzer and Bill Springer have consistently cleared 13 feet this season. Metzer's 13 ft. 6 in. in the Cornell meet is a foot better than Kilby Smith, the varsity's top man, has done.
With Capt. Bob Rittenburg and Joel Cohen on the squad McCurdy can generally count on his team's outscoring the opponents in the jumping events, but Dartmouth's Heptagonal chap and captain, John Harlor did 22 ft. 7in. in the broad jump against Cornell and could edge out the Crimson's aces.
The hammer and shot come first in the order of the meet's events, but they could determine the margin of victory for either team. Dartmouth's George Bixby is its best man in both these events. Last year Bixby set a Dartmouth freshman record in the shot with a eave that was well over 49 feet. McCurdy expects that Art Siler may need to improve on his 48ft. 8 toss in the B.U. meet to win.
Carl Goldman should, however, beat Bixby in the weight throw if he can continue to toss the weight beyond 50 feet.
