With the installation of the first new mailboxes in the Yard, the College ended almost 80 years of violating federal postal regulations.

The existing mailboxes in the old freshman dormitories are located above the first floor and they have only narrow slits through which postmen must drop letters. The mailmen have not only been forced to climb an extra distance, but cannot deliver especially large letters, and must throw magazines on the floor, open to theft.

The new boxes will be installed on the first floor of the dorms, and the postmen will be bale to open groups of them with a master key. Postal rules have required this ever since regular mail service began in the city of Cambridge.
