Varsity, '59 Both Defeat BU In First Track Meet, 84-24

Sweeping six of eleven events, the varsity track team performed as expected in crushing undermanned Boston University last night, 84 to 24. At the same time, the Yardlings swamped the B.U. freshmen by the same score.

Biggest surprise of the meet was the manner in which the varsity millors ran IC4A 2-milo champion Bill Terry into the ground. In an excellent indoor time, Ken Wilson led teammates Pete Reider and Phil Williams to a sweep in 4:20.0.

Another standout for the varsity was Henry Moore who lept 6 feet 2 inches to win the high jump. High scorer Joel Cohen took both the 40-yard high hurdles and the broad jump, leading varsity sweeps in both.

In what are supposedly the varsity's weakest events, the weights, B.U.'s Dick Batos took the 35-pound weight, with the varsity's Pete Harpol second. Crimson Captain Art Siler won the shot.

Expected depth in the distances paid off for the varsity in sweeps of both the 600 and the 2-mile in addition to that in the mile. Dick Wharton led in the 600, while Ralph Perry took the 2-mile. In the 1000, Jim Cairns led all the way to win in the good time of 2:20.4.

Kip Smith scored the other individual Crimson win, taking the pole vault with a leap of 12 feet, six inches.

The weakest varsity showing was in the 40-yard dash, where B.U., led by Lloyd Bell and Captain Bill Shearer, the New England dash champion, took the first two places.

'59 SCORES EASY WIN

Competitively, the freshmen had an easier time as the 9-man B.U. squad forfeited six events for lack of entrants. The Yardlings ran these for practice.

Of the remaining competitive events, B.U. took four first places to the Yardlings' two. Freshman winners were Joel Landau in the dash and Bill Gillen in the mile. The mile relay team of Dave Brahms, Dave Resenthal, Lee Barnes, and Al Gordon defeated its B.U. rival by almost a lap.
