Red German's third goal of the night, at 4:51 of a sudden death overtime, sent the Crimson to a 5-4 defeat at the hands of Providence College at the Garden last night. German's winning tally was scored when the Crimson was shorthanded.
The Crimson dissipated an early lead gained on first period goals by Bob Owen and Bob McVey. Owen, standing in the crease, opened the scoring at 16:20 when he deflected a long shot by Joe Crehore. Providence missed a couple of good scoring chances, and then McVey picked up the puck inside his own blue line, skated the length of the rink, and beat Providence goalie Ed Hornstein to give the Crimson a 2-0 edge that stood up until the period's close.
Phil Crawford replaced Hornstein in the nets at the start of the second period, and it was clear that the game was then much more equal. The Friars began to press Crimson goalie Charlie Flynn, and scored for the first time at 7:04 on a 45-foot shot by Lou LaFontaine. Terry O'Malley countered for the Crimson at 8:12 by poking in a loose puck lying in front of Crawford.
Leading 3 to 1, the Crimson gave Providence two fine opportunities to score when first Pete Summers (at 10:00) and then Dan Ullyot (at 12:20) were sent off on minor penalties. But the Friars did not tally until German slapped in a pass from Ed Monahan at 14:43.
Bob Cleary intercepted a poor clearance by defenseman Mike McDonough, skated around the other defenseman, Roland Rabitor, and completely faked Crawford to score unassisted at 17:10. The period closed with the Crimson ahead, 4 to 2, just after Albie Wells had been penalized at 19:59.
Providence dominated play in the third period, and at the ten-minute mark the Crimson had managed only two shots. But by then the Friars had drawn closer on Monahan's 1:44 tally, on a pass from German. Wells was still off the ice at the time.
The Crimson was short two men when Providence tied the score. Ullyot had been sent off at 16:37 for tripping, and then Cleary was penalized for falling on the puck in the Crimson crease at 17:05. German evened the count at 4-all 13 seconds later on passes from Monahan and Rabitor.
German's overtime goal culminated an overtime in which the Friars had completely dominated play. Flynn had already made four tough saves, and there were only ten seconds to run of Bob Owen's interference penalty, when German took a short pass from Monahan and beat Flynn from the left
