PBH Will Extend Blood Solicitation

The Phillips Brooks House blood drive will be extended until Wednesday because of the slim number of pledges so far, Peter K. Guness '57, co-chairman of the drive, said last night.

Undergraduates promised only 1200 pints last week. This compares with 1800 pledges last fall, from which 950 were actually collected. The total reached 3000 pledges and 2000 collections in one solicitation during the Korean War.

Guness explained that the poor response has resulted because students do not realize that "just as much blood is needed during peacetime as in time of war."

One of the greatest difficulties has always been to collect the blood that has been pledged, Guness stated. Of the 1800 who pledged last year, 400 failed to secure parental releases, and between 450 and 500 "just didn't show up."
