Adams to Follows Kirkland's Lead In Strengthening Science Tutorial

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

Twenty-four hours after Kirkland House announced its experimental program of tutorial for concentrators in science, Zeph Stewart, Allston Burr Senior Tutor in Adams House disclosed that a smaller program in his House was being expanded.

"We had one resident tutor in science, meeting with the science concentrators last spring, and we are broadening our program to include several more tutors this fall," he said. "But," he added, "the final decision on such tutorial programs must be made by the science departments. No one should tell them how to run their courses."

Meanwhile, officials of the other Houses were generally favorable toward a tutorial for science concentrators. "We have had similar plans in mind, and we think the Kirkland experiment is a grand scheme," Ronald M. Ferry '12, Master of Winthrop House said. "Of course, you have to have the good-will of the departments before going any further. We were somewhat hesitant with our plans," he added, "because we weren't sure of what support we'd get from the departments."

"We think it's splendid that someone is trying it out," Gordon M. Fair, Master of Dunster House, said, referring to the new program. He pointed out, however, that approval of the tutorial plan would take some time, since "the University moves quite slowly in these matters." He noted that Dunster House already has a weekly science table where House residents meet with men from the science departments.
