The number of College scholarships awarded to freshmen fell from 323 last year, to 316 in the class of '59, F. Skiddy von Stade, Jr. '38, dean of Freshmen announced yesterday.

The figures are part of a complete report on the freshman class released by the Dean's Office yesterday. Von Stade said the drop in College awards was due in part to "the increasing number of scholarships given freshmen by outside sources, such as the Ford Foundation and General Motors."

The report revealed that the number of freshmen this year has dropped to 1116, compared to 1160 in '58. New England, with 33 percent of the class, again leads all other regions in representation. Public schools are represented by 52.6 percent of '59, a drop of 1.3 percent from last year.
