WHRB Claims Obstruction In Broadcast Booth Denial

WHRB charged last night that the Athletic Department "is still fighting us every step of the way" over the question of football broadcasts from the Stadium.

Geoffrey M. Kalmas '56, president of the undergraduate station, said he would appeal to Dean Wasson today about the decision of W. Henry Johnston, Director of Sports Information, that WHRB cannot use a Stadium broadcast booth for its this Saturday.

The booth in question is unassigned at present, but Johnston contends that "it must be kept open in case some commercial station decides to show up." He insists, therefore, that WHRB broadcast the game from the back row of the press box.

"Commercial stations naturally merit better treatment than WHRB," Johnston said last night.

Kalmus, in reply, cited Monday's decision by the Faculty Committee on Athletics that WHRB should have "the exact treatment" as other stations in regard to broadcast rights at the Stadium. "Johnston has violated the spirit of this ruling," he charged.

The WHRB head also said that the Athletic Department has issued his station only three passes to the Cornell game, whereas WBZ and other outfits broadcasting from the Stadium regularly use five or six men.

Johnston, on the other hand, asserted: "It is absolutely silly that the WHRB people think they are being singled out and abused."
