Varsity Eleven Beats Tech Soccer Squad in Overtime

"We had all the breaks, but we didn't play soccer all afternoon," varsity coach Bruce Munro said yesterday, following his team's 2-1 overtime victory over M.I.T.

And it was a hard day all around for the Crimson. Inaccurate passing kept a late-starting team from taking the lead until the second overtime period. In addition, regular right-inside Dick Fisher suffered a badly broken leg and will not return for the rest of the season.

The score was 1 to 1 at the end of the fourth quarter, and it remained the same until 2:30 in the second over time period. Then Bill Lingelbach took a short pass from center-half Stacy Hobnes and, after one dribble, scored from 15 yards out.

But the jubiliation that followed Lingel-bach's kick was not shared by coach Munro after the game. "In only one game this season were we the first team to score," he said. Yesterday Tech took the lead at 5:43 of the first quarter, and remained ahead until mid-way through the third period.

It was this tally that Munro referred to when he called the Crimson lucky. On a slanting penalty kick, Grey Hodnett booted the ball into the corner of the nets, beyond the outstretched hands of the diving M.I.T. goalie.

Hodnett's score followed an Engineer penalty when Lingelbach was jostled as he went up in the air to head a corner-kick. Most onlookers were surprised to see the referee call this one a foul, after he had just missed calling two more obvious fouls by the Crimson.

The freshmen had a somewhat easier time yesterday, beating M.I.T., 4 to 0, on Tech's Briggs Field.
