President Pusey yesterday announced the appointment of three special committees to report to him on specific topics related to expansion. It was his first public step toward settling the extent of future College growth.
While these committees are preparing their reports, the Faculty Committee on Educational Policy, under the chairmanship of Dean Bundy, will simultaneously be tackling the general problem of the faculty's reaction to expansion, it was also learned yesterday.
The appointments follow a general recommendation for a faculty committee made by a visiting committee of Overseers last spring and would seem to be the President's own answer to his earlier caution that no settlement of the expansion problem can be reached before sufficient data is collected.
Bundy Heads Committees
Dean Bundy, who will chair the three specific committees as well as the CEP, said yesterday that the groups hoped to be able to present reports in the areas by Christmas. The move represents, he indicated, a desire by the President to gain the views of respected members of the faculty on problems that must be faced if the College is to increase its size.
The President named the three following groups to report to him: A Committee on Appointments, Promotions, and Retirements, a Committee on compensation, and a Committee on Undergraduate Costs.
Will Study Faculty Size, Costs
The Committee on Appointments is expected to deal in part with the advisability of increasing the size of the faculty, and the steps necessary to doing so. The Committee on Compensation is expected to enquire into such matters as fixed and fluid costs in the College, as well as any future improvements in the form of insurance or other benefits that might go to the faculty instead of a straight salary.
Named to the Committees were:
