Yardling Six Wins Opener On Last Period Goals, 4-2

Three last period goals gave the freshman hockey team a 4-2 victory over aggressive Belmont High yesterday in their opening game on the Watson rink. The Yardlings face Melrose High here today at 4 p.m.

Several potential Crimson scoring plays were broken up by the fine work of Belmont goalie Jack Volpe, especially in the second period when he made half of his 31 saves. The Yardlings showed surprising playmaking ability but were unable to translate it into goals until the third period.

After a scoreless first stanza, Belmont went ahead when Crowley shot the puck under the skates of goalie Bob Connors at 4:53 of the second period. Alex Kalil's rebound score a minute later tied the game until Belmont's McLaughlin tallied on a 15-foot shot into the lower right corner at 14:43.

The Yardlings tied the score again and went ahead in the space of nine seconds in the last period. Defense man Les Stevens beat Volpe on a blue-line shot at 4:57, and Dave Beadie fired the puck into the upper right corner after taking the ensuing face off.

Ed Harding scored the final Yardling goal five minutes later on a hard 20-foot shot. Bob Owen had taken Harding's place on the first line with Bob McVey and Lyle Guttu in the second period. Woody Harris teamed with Stevens on the starting defense.
