2831 to Receive Degrees at Commencement; Seven Classes Return to Harvard to Celebrate

Approximately 3,000 students will receive degrees from the College and the ten graduate schools at Harvard's 303rd Commencement this morning.

This afternoon the Alumni Association will hold its annual meeting, when President Pusey, John Cowles '25, president of the Association, and two honorary degree winners will speak.

At the Commencement exercises 990 seniors from the College will receive Bachelor of Arts Degrees, with 259 graduating cum laude, 123 magna cup laude, 14 magna cum laude with highest honors, and 27 with the highest honor that the College can award, a summa cum laude diploma.

Three Speeches

This morning's ceremony will include the journey from the State House to the Yard of Governor Christian A. Herter '15; the opening of the Commencement exercises by the High Sheriff of Middlesex County Howard W. Fitzpatrick; the seating of Pusey in the historic Tudor chair, and the speeches of three outstanding degree recipients.

After at 9:30 a.m. procession into the Tercentenary Theatre from Holworthy Hall, the Rev. E. Spencer Parsons, acting chairman of the Board of Preachers, will offer the prayer.

The Commencement Parts come next. Andrew T. Cole '54 will give the Latin Salutatory Oration; Milton S. Gwirtzman will give the English Oration on "Education and the Silent Generation"; and Mortimer H. Chambers '49 will give the Graduate School English Part. After the awarding of the degrees, the exercises will close with the singing of the Commencement Hymn and a benediction.

The meeting of the Alumni Association, which will include the presentation of 1929's gift, will start at 1:30.
