Death interrupted a pleasant afternoon of rowing yesterday for two freshmen.
Sculling up the Charles, Stanley C. Baker and Edward A. Lottick were hailed from the bank below Weeks Bridge by an elderly couple, who pointed to an object afloat 30 feet off shore.
The scullers rowed over, to find the body of an elderly woman floating face down. Pushing with their ears, they maneuvered the body close to the shore, landed, and summoned the police.
Fifteen minutes later a Metropolitan Police motor launche made its way up the river, hauled the body aboard with boathooks, and started down toward Boston again.
The police reported last night that the body had been identified, but they declined to reveal the woman's name. They did say, however, that she is not believed to have had any connection with the University.
Monday evening the police had dragged the river for several hours, following a report that someone had jumped off the River St. bridge just below Dunster House.
