Elis Defeat Tennis Varsity; Yard Squad Beats Yale, 5-4

NEW HAVEN, Conn., May 12 The Yale varsity tennis team overpowered Harvard, 10 to 5, here this afternoon. The win was the Elis' seventh straight in league play and marked the first conference loss of the season for the Crimson. Meanwhile, on adjoining courts, the Yardling tennis squad won, 5 to 4, for its first triumph over the Bull Pups since 1951.

In the varsity match, Yale swept the first seven singles and top three doubles with the loss of only two sets. The Crimson's Don Bossart won a set against Eric Moore in the seventh singles, as did Ham Gravem and Brooks Harris against Moore and Sam English in the third doubles.

The Crimson victories were provided by Conrad Fischer, Horb Stone, and Maynard Canfield in the eight, ninth, and tenth singles and by the Terry King-Stone and Gene-Mann-Fischer combinations in the fourth and fifth doubles.

Gravem Loses

Singles losers in straight sets for the varsity were Gravem, Harris, Captain John Rauh, Alex Haegler, Mann, and Don Spencer, in that order. Gravem was beaten by Bill Cranston, 6-1, 6-2, in the first singles. Haegler pulled a muscle early in his match against Dave Seifer. Although he completed the singles, the junior had to sit out the doubles. Coach Jack Barnaby left Rauh at first doubles and replaced Haegler with Canfield. The second doubles duo of Spencer and Bossart remained intact.

The freshman match was considerably more encouraging for the Crimson future, for Captain Steve Gottleib, Ben Heckscher, and Cal Place took the first three singles. Barry Boehm then grabbed the sixth singles, and Gottlieb and Landon Smith clinched the big victory by winning the second doubles in straight sets. Smith played excellent tennis all afternoon despite a bad cold.

Corey Wynn's freshmen will play Brown at Soldiers Field at 2:30 p.m. today. The varsity is tentatively scheduled to meet the Bruins on the same courts at 1 p.m.
