Lacrosse Team Encounters Williams

Crimson's Waring, Curtis, Aiello Will Face Rod Stark, New England's Top Goalie

By Peter G. Palches

The varsity lacrosse team takes on Williams, its first major obstacle in the path to the New England championship, this afternoon at Williamstown.

The game pits Ephman Rod Stark, the best goalie in New England, against Captain Phil Waring, Ed Curtis, and Monk Aiello of the Crimson, the best attack in New England.

Stark defeated the Crimson last year in a superb exhibition of goal-tending and will be no less massive a figure in front of the nets today. He is the largest goalie in the game, with very little cage showing behind him.

The Crimson trio was passing and shooting brilliantly in the first half of Wednesday's game with Tufts and is in top shape for this game. Curtis and Waring have a four-goal-a-game average and Aiello has as good an assist average in the games thus far. They'll be pumping them at the goal again today but the shooting will have to be especially sharp to pass Stark.

Crump Outstanding

Steven DenHartog, the Crimson goalie, has been very dependable in his last two games, allowing only one enemy goal during his stays in the cage, and the Crimson defense in general has been performing exceptionally well. Tom Crump at crease is the key man in this defense, backed up by Paul Jones, Fred Sharf, and John Hartwell. Part of DenHatog's success stems from the fact that his defensemen don't let the opposition in close enough for shots.

At midfield Coach Bruce Munro has three very strong units. Fred Horween, Karl Bjork, and Todd Goodwin will probably get the starting assignment today. The second line will be Chuck Edwards, Jim Telfer, and Skip Baldwin. Munro's "green midfield." Tim Anderson, Dexter Lewis, and Albie Wells, showed great improvement in the Tufts game and may prove to be the most effective of the three, but it still lacks varsity game experience and will be the third line today.

Williams' is Midfield Strong

Williams is always strong in the midfield positions and does much of its scoring from the outside. The Crimson so far has been an "inside" team, so the big function of the midfielders today will be checking back on the defense. Horween and Lewis are the biggest scoring threats among the Crimson midfielders.

The team leaves by bus early this morning for the 140-mile trip to Williams-town.
