In his final assault on the record books for the regular season, sophomore Dave Hawkins will lead a delegation of five Crimson swimmers to New Haven for the National Amateur Athletic Union meet at the Yale pool this weekend.
Hawkins will enter the 220-yard orthodox breast stroke today and the 100-yard butterfly tomorrow. In addition he will swim second on a 400-yard medley relay team of Alan Rapperport, Ralph Zani, and Marv Sandler on Saturday.
Freshman captain Sigo Falk will join Hawkins in the 100-yard butterfly. The first six finishing positions win team points, and Yale's Dennis O'Connor placed fifth in the NCAA meet last week with a time of 1:02.2. Falk swam the 100 in 1:02.1 against Williston Academy on February 26, and he can do better.
Hawkins set a 59.4 Crimson record in winning the 100 at the NCAA's and is favored to repeat in this event. Every time he has swum it, he has swum it faster.
What was formerly the 200-yard breast stroke has become the 220-yard orthodox breast stroke, which rules out the butterfly. But Hawkins is one of the few swimmers today who can do the orthodox breast stroke almost equally as well as the butterfly and therefore is still favored. He won the 200-yard (butterfly) breast stroke at the NCAA's in 2:15.4, also setting a Crimson mark.
In order to include the orthodox breast stroke, the 300-yard medley relay has been lengthened to 400 yards. Rapperport will do the back stroke leg, Zani the butterfly, and Sandler the free style.
