An annual award for an outstanding athlete in the Senior Class has been established in honor of William J. Bingham '16, former Harvard Athletic Director.
The prize, which was set up by a group of Bingham's friends, will be given each year to that member of the graduating class who, because of "his integrity, courage, leadership and ability on the athletic field, has best served the purposes of Harvard as exemplified by Bingham during his years here."
One of the nation's top half-milers as an undergraduate, Bingham later served as Athletic Director for 25 years.
The new award will be in the form of a suitably inscribed plaque with the names of the annual recipients. The winners will also receive a citation as a permanent token of the prize.
Thomas D. Bolles, Director of Athletics, is chairman of a committee that has been formed to make the Bingham awards. Others on the body are Wilbur J. Bender '27 and Daniel S. Cheever '39 from the faculty; and Joseph R. Hamlen '04, William A. Barron, Jr. '14, and Augustus Thorndike, Jr. '41 from the alumni.
