Yale withstood a strong challenge by Cornell Saturday to capture the Heptagonal track and field championships, 47 2/35 to the Big Red's 42 2/35, at Ithaca. The Crimson, with three second places, finished fifth, behind Army and Columbia.
The Elis, winners of the IC4A track crown last Saturday, took first places with Stu Thomson in the weights, Milk Stanley in the 1000 yard run and the two mile relay, and Bill Donegan, a tie in the pole vault.
Crimson coach Bill McCurdy was especially pleased with Dave Alpers, his sophomore ace, who placed second in the 600 yard run behind Fred Schlereth of Columbia. Alpers beat out Ross Price of Yale. The winning time was 1:12.7.
Rittenburg Second
Bob Rittenburg, with a bad foot, leaped 22 feet 11 5/8 inches, only an eighth of an inch off John Harlor of Dartmouth's best jump, to finish second in the broad jump. The hard-luck performer had to settle for a fifth in the hurdles won by MacAllister Booth of Cornell.
Hal Gerry running a good race behind Don Farley of Cornell, finished second in the two mile run. Farley's time was 9:36.1. Other varsity placers were Renny Little, fifth in the 600; Carl Goldman, fourth in the weights; Kip Smith, tie for third in the pole vault; the two-mile relay, fifth.
