Wray Lashes Out At Union Charge Of AFL 'Sell Out'

By Bernard M. Gwertzman

Donald G. Wray, former board member of the Harvard University Employees Representative Association, last night accused Francis M. McNamara, president of the organization, of "failing the members terribly."

A follower of McNamara when the union leader won contral of the HUERA last year, Wray last night bitterly assailed the president.

"I have never sold out my fellow workers, something Mr. McNamara is doing daily," he said.

Earlier in the week, McNamara had charged Wray with "selling out his union" to the American Federation of Labor. For the second straight year, the A.F. of L is attempting to gain control of HUERA's membership.

"Wray was trying to sell the A.F. of L. to everybody, and he wasn't doing it for nothing," McNamara said Thursday; "so we put it to him: 'Resign or we'll boot you out.'"

Wray's Charges

Wray had resigned from the HUERA executive board ten days ago, claiming that present officeholders were taking "little or no interest in the maid situation." The officers were "sitting idly by, while close to 200 maids faced loss of jobs," he insisted.

"Last year, no other member of HUERA did as much as I to prevent the A.F. of L. from gaining control of the bargaining rights of the janitors and maids. I thought the officers of HUERA that I supported were capable of running the union and I wanted to give them a chance to prove it." Wray said last night. "The officers have not proved themselves capable; they have failed the members."

The A.F. of L. could prevent the displacement of many maids, Wray claimed. "The A.F. of L. has the best legal corps of any union," he explained. "HUERA has not even hired a single lawyer."
