Five Loses, 87-47, As Penn Reaches Ivy Second Place

Penn made it nine straight losses for the varsity basketball team at Philadelphia last night, winning a dreary, lopsided contest by the score of 87 to 47.

While the contest only plunged the Crimson deeper into the Ivy League cellar with a 2-10 record, it kept alive Penn's hopes for a second straight league title and the accompanying N.C.A.A. tournament berth.

The Quakers now have a 9-3 record and are tied with Princeton for second place, behind league-leading Cornell which has won 10 and lost two. Penn plays Cornell Saturday, however, and can tie for the lead by winning that game.

Flaxman Leads Scoring

For the varsity, the one bright spot of last night's game was the unexpected high scoring of junior Larry Flaxman. Flaxman, although he had not played in another varsity game this year, and played only the second half last night, led the Crimson with ten points.

Following him in the visitors' meager scoring totals were Rollin Perry with nine, Bill Dennis with eight, and Harry Sacks with seven.

Penn, meanwhile, played its first team for only the first half. In the second the Quakers used all their players, and all of them scored. Dick Hoylmun, the Quaker captain, was high for the game with 26 points and thus became the third player in Penn basketball history to score more than 1,000 in his college career.

The varsity plays at Yale on Saturday and then closes its season by meeting Pennsylvania here next Monday night.

Yardlings Top B.C.

Providing its usual contrast to the varsity, however, the Yardling basketball team yesterday defeated the Boston College freshmen, 65 to 48, for its 15th straight win.

Freshman captain Bob Dolven scored 16 points and Bob Canty 10. The two are exactly tied in season's scoring as they enter the Yale game Saturday.
