David F. Hawkins '56 of New South Wales, Australia, has been selected by the Australian Swimming Union to compete for his country in the British Empire Games, to be held at Vancouver, Canada, on July 28.
This will be the fourth time Hawkins has represented Australia in international competition. He won the breast stroke events in the last Empire Games and the butterfly in both the 1952 Olympics and the Canterbury Centennial Games in New Zealand.
At Vancouver he will swim in the 880 free style and the 220 orthodox breast stroke event, as well as the butterfly in the 440 medley relay.
Hawkins has established three Crimson swimming records so far this season. In his first varsity meet, the opener against Springfield on December 12, he swam the 220 free style in 2:09.6, chopping more than a second off a 1937 mark of 2:10.8. In the same meet he cut a 2:24.8 record in the 200-yard breast stroke down to 2:22.
Against M.I.T. on January 13 he broke his freshman record 1:36.6 in the 150 individual medley by butterflying, back stroking, and free styling the distance in 1:34.8. Then, against Princeton last Saturday, he knocked four seconds off his December breast stroke mark, swimming the 200 yards in 2:18.
