'54 Marshal Race Draws Record 85 Senior Nominees

Eighty-five students, the largest number on record, will run for Class Marshal and the Senior Class Committee on March 22 and 23, Co-Chairmen Joseph Murphy '56 and Paul Donovan '55 announced yesterday.

"At 5:30 Monday only 25 men turned in petitions," said Murphy. "But by the time they were due on Tuesday the number had jumped to 85." "Every year the majority of petitions arrive during the last day," he added.

Out of the 85 running, three will be elected Marshals and another nine chosen Committeemen. The votes for Marshal will be counted on a preferential basis while those for Committeemen will be tabulated by plurality.

Each student is given a list of the 85 candidates. Students may vote for 12 candidates in order of preference by placing a number from one to 12 by the name of each man for whom he is voting.

Vote for Marshals Weighted

In counting the ballots, the Election Committee first tabulates the number of points for each candidate, counting 12 for a first place vote, 11 for second place, until all his votes have ben weighted properly. The three candidates with the highest number of vote points become Marshals.

The Committee then counts the number of check marks each candidate has, counting each check as one point. The nine with the highest number join the three Marshals as Committeemen.

Murphy felt that the large number of candidates would stimulate greater interest in the voting. Last year, 650 out of a possible 950 seniors balloted. The figure will probably be higher this year. Each candidate has already furnished the required 25 signatures on his nominating petition.

The elections will be held in each House dining hall on March 23. At Dudley, balloting will take place at noon on Monday the 22nd, and on Tuesday the 23rd.
