Brown Downs Sextet, 6-4, For First Pentagonal Loss

LYNN, Mass., Feb. 23--Brown's fighting sextet withstood a four-goal Crimson rally to hand the varsity its first Pentagonal loss in five starts, 6 to 4, before a capacity crowd here tonight.

Cooney Welland's team still holds first place in the league, however, with a record that now stands four wins and one loss. Brown moves into a tie for third place with Dartmouth at 3-4.

Leo Setian, with his second goal, at 3:46 of the second period, gave Brown an insurmountable four-goal lead before the game was 24 minutes old. Crimson third-line center Frank Mahoney scored twice in the period and Captain Norm Wood and Bill Cleary added goals to narrow the lead, but the varsity never caught up.

Vietze Cinches Win

With seven minutes to go in the final period, the score stood 5 to 4 for the Bruins and it appeared the varsity might at least tie the count and send the game into overtime. But at 13:29, Brown's first-line center Art Vietze took advantage of too much Crimson pressure, got a clean jump out of his zone, and beat Flynn with the final Bruin tally.

The varsity set up its plays consistently as the game progressed, but only occasionally got one past goalie Dave Halvorsen. However, Brown's determination and ability to shoot, even off-balance, and still hit the corners, paid off.

In the preliminary game, the Yardling sextet defeated the Brown Cubs, 5 to 3. Defenseman Chuck Papalia led the Crimson offensive attack with a goal and three assists. Newly-elected Captain Derick Nicholas tied the score for the Yardlings at the beginning of the second period and Tom Crowley and Louie Newell later scored to clinch the win. Dave Holmes netted the Crimson's first goal.

In games today, the freshmen travel to Phillips Andover Academy, while the JVs meet Holy Cross at 7 p.m. on the new rink. In their last game the JVs whipped the Crusaders, 9 to 2.
