Swimmers Improve EISL Standing, Defeat Green 49-35, Quakers 67-17

The varsity swimming team practically clinched second place in the Eastern Intercollegiate Swimming League over the weekend; both the varsity and the freshmen maintained their undefeated records, winning a total of four meets in three days.

The varsity sank Dartmouth at Hanover yesterday, 49 to 35, after drowning Penn, 67 to 17, in the IAB pool Saturday night. The Yardlings meanwhile topped Andover, 41 to 34, and then dropped the Green freshmen, 51 to 33.

For the varsity at Hanover All-American Don Mulvey set a new Dartmouth pool record of 2:16.6 for the 200-yard backstroke. Pete Smalls edged Tuck Creamer by 0.2 points for second place in the one-meter dive, and Captain Charley Egan swam the breaststroke for the first time this season, placing second to teammate Ralph Zani.

Add this to a medley relay victory by the Crimson's Mulvey, Zani, and John Millard and a one-two finish by Marv Sandler and Egan in the individual medley, and the varsity led, 42-35, going into the last event.

But the last event was the free-style relay, which Dartmouth was favored to take, and it would have given the Green the seven points needed to tie. Here Ted Whatley and Alan Rapperport picked up a one-foot lead, Sandler stretched it to two lengths, and Millard held it.

Dartmouth's John Glover won the 220-and 100-yard freestyle and placed third in the 440. Teammate Jos Hust won the last event, setting a new Dartmouth's record of 4:48.2 and beating the Crimson's Davo Hawkins by an inch.

When the freshmen topped Andover it was the first time in ten years that they had defeated both Phillips Exeter and Andover Academies in the same season. Roger Clifton, Chouteau Dyer, Jon Lind, and Stu Ogden combined to set a new freshman 200-yard relay mark of 1:36.1.

Against the Dartmouth freshmen, Captain Sigo Falk set a breast stroke record with a time of 2:34.1 and joined Pete Macky and Dyer for a medley relay mark of 3:04.5
