A team of four College debaters won first place in the M.I.T. invitational debate tournament last Saturday.
Winning over 24 Eastern colleges in two days of debating were Richard A. Anderson '56, Toby Citrin '56, Joseph E. Frank '56, and Vincent R. Larson '56.
In the semi-finals and finals the four men argued the affirmative side of the topic: "Resolved: That the United States should adopt a policy of free trade." Their arguments centered around the role of the tariff in straining our foreign relations, although they also stressed that the prosperity of our export industries depends largely upon the ability of other countries to sell to us.
For winning the tournament, the Debate Council receives two trophies, one a permanent memento of the victory. The other, a larger trophy, is kept by the winning debating club for one year until a school succeeds in winning it three times.
A negative team from Bates College placed second in the tournament and the University of Pennsylvania placed third.
