On Bob Rittenburg's tempermental foot rest the varsity track team's chances in the Big Three track meet Monday afternoon at Yale. If he can run, the team may take second; if he can't, third place seems inevitable.
If Rittenburg can compete, Coach Bill McCurdy plans to enter him in three events, the high hurdles, broad jump, and high jump. A healthy Rittenburg could take all three; a below-par Rittenburg would still place.
Yale, strong in all running events, and powerful in the field events, should romp to an easy victory. The real battle will be for second place between Princeton and the Crimson.
The only definite varsity favorite, discounting Rittenburg, is Hal Gerry in the two mile. Second in the event last year, the only runner he has to fear Monday is teammate Hubie Maguire. There is a chance, though, that John Cleary of Yale may cause trouble.
The best race of the day looks like the 600 yard run. Ross Price of Yale, Dave Alpers of the varsity, and Joe Meyers of Princeton should be inches apart at the finish. Price, with the Yale record of 1:11.8, is a slight favorite.
Close Mile Relay
The Crimson mile quartet of Jack Richards, Renny Little, Alan Howe, and Alpers should win, although Princeton with a 3:20.2 in its last effort may pull a surprise.
McCurdy is counting on strong performances from Richards in the 1000, Carl Goldman in the weight throw. Art Siler in the shot, Bob Blake and Brian Reynolds in the high jump, and Norm Bruck and Pete Dow in the dash. None of these men is favored, but they all should place high in their events.
The freshman team, led by Joel Cohen and Dick Wharton, after meeting Exeter away today, will compete in the Big Three freshman meet Monday.
