The varsity wrestling team lost its third straight dual meet, 17 to 13, Saturday afternoon to a Springfield squad which was strong where the Crimson was weak.
Putting together a string of five decisions, the Gymnasts caught a better-conditioned varsity off its guard. The Crimson wrestlers had traveled to Spring-field expecting their improved shape to mean victory, but never held a lead during the entire meet.
Without its two regular lightweights, the squad dropped its opening two matches. Sophomore Phil Herrera at 123 lost, 6 to 1, after being tied up most of the duel, while 130-pound Don Fern was pinned in the second period.
Phil Burnaman at 137 pounds momentarily put the varsity in the scoring column with a head scissors pin, but hopes of winning the meet diminished when Frank Baker and Dick Hook lost one-sided decisions at 147 and 157.
Captain Chick Chandler edged out a 2 to 1 win over his Gymnast counterpart, and 177-pound Ken Culbert, pinning for the fifth time this season, clamped on an early third period cradle which moved the Crimson within four points of Springfield.
But heavy weight Pete Morrison found his opponent too tough for a pin and the five points needed for victory and lost a 5 to 0 decision.
Yardling heavyweight Bob Wynne pinned in the second period of his match to give the freshmen a narrow 16 to 14 win over Exeter.
