Bill Meigs, outstanding guard and captain-elect of the varsity football team, was named to the second team of the Associated Press All-American squad yesterday.
Bud Brooks of Arkansas and Ralph Chesnauskas of Army were the first team guard choices. Calvin Jones of Iowa, whose picture appeared on the cover of "Sports Illustrated" this fall, was Meigs' mate on the second team.
But Arthur Sampson, one of New England's outstanding football authorities, considers Meigs superior to Chesnauskas. Sampson, a Boston Herald writer, said, "I've seen both Meigs and Chesnauskas play for two years. Meigs has exceptional ability and he also has a terrific enthusiasm for the game which most players do not have. Not only does he carry out his own assignment, but he is always helping out the other fellow. While Chesnauskas does his own job he is not as important to his team as Meigs is. Meigs would have no trouble playing for any college team, and, if he puts on ten or 20 more pounds, as most players do when they get out of college, he should be able to play pro ball."
Crimson line coach Ted Schmitt agreed with Sampson that Meigs has the ability to play professionally, "though I hope he does not." Schmitt, considers Meigs the best guard he has ever coached.
