Freshmen Reject Sign Censorship

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The Freshman Union Committee narrowly defeated a proposal to censor Smoker campaign signs at its meeting Tuesday.

The rejected plan would have required that each sign for the campaign be initialed by a Smoker Rules Committee member.

The defeat came after Michael J. Harrington protested against any censorship, on the grounds that college students are responsible enough to be trusted. Harrington said no freshman would vote for a candidate who put up a lurid sign.

Richard T. Cooper, a member of the Smoker Rules Committee, declared before the vote that if the rule passed the would refuse to censor any poster.

A specific proposal that each student wear an identifying card on his cost failed, however, to come to a vote.
