Two faculty members who have made significant polio virus discoveries this past year received the greatest acclaim of any of the seven 1954 Nobel prize-winners at the formal presentation in Stockholm yesterday.
The crowd of 1300 European notables gave a standing ovation to John F. Eaders, associate professor of Bacteriology and Immunology, and Thomas H. Weller, Strong Professor of Tropical Public Health, for their polio virus discoveries which are the stepping-stone to a polio vaccine.
Dr. Sven Gard of Sweden in his presentation speech, said that the discoveries marked a "new epoch" for science around the world.
