Crimson Shell Sinks After River Collision

Two varsity shells collided and one sank on the Charles River yesterday. The accident occurred at 5:15 p.m.

Robert A. Dole, Jr. '56, who was rowing third oar in the boat that sank, said, "We just never saw them in the darkness. They hit us head-on between my position and four, as we were heading downstream, opposite Stillman Infirmary."

No students were injured in the crash, but the shell that sank was completely split and may be a total loss. The bow of the shell which hit it was also damaged. An eight-oared shell costs approximately $2,000 to replace.
