Over a thousand students--the largest crowd in the Yard since the pre-game Yale rally four years ago--participated in last night's hour-long football rally. They held up traffic for half an hour on Massachusetts Avenue and toured through Radcliffe, but otherwise remained well-behaved.
The rally, which began near University Hall at 7 p.m., built up momentum by 8 p.m., when the crowd of undergraduates and their dates gathered by Widener to cheer and listen to freshman coach Bob Marguerita, who told them "the bulldog is still a pup." A small group of Yale freshman and jayvee football players shouted Eli songs, to the annoyance of the very highly partisan crowd.
After the freshman glee club sang, the throng pushed through the Yard gates onto Massachusetts Avenue. There, they halted traffic and a few climbed on cars. The only casualty of the evening resulted after a freshman tried to pull off the wire of a trackless trolley. He cut himself when a Yard proctor pulled him down.
Two hundred then moved on to Radcliffe, but the police arrived ten minutes later to take several bursar's cards. The girls threw water from their windows and a housemother invited the crowd in. The invitation proved unnecessary, since most of the girls came out.
