Strings Attached: How Harvard’s Wealthiest Alumni Are Reshaping University Giving
Of the 473 members elected to the 84th Congress this year, four senators and 35 representatives are Harvard alumni.
The four senators, all elected to another term, are Leverett Saltonstall '14 (R, Mass.), Paul H. Douglas '16 (D, III.), Samuel J. Ervin, Jr. '21 (D, N. Car.), and Theodore F. Green, Law '92 (D, R.I.). John F. Kennedy '40 (D, Mass.), still has four more years in the Senate, making a total of five alumni in the upper house.
Politically, the 35 representatives divide this way: 21 are Republicans and 13 are Democrats.
In Massachusetts, six alumni were elected to the House, only one of whom, Torbert H. MacDonald '40 (D) is a newcomer. Elsewhere the most surprising victory was that of William C. Cramer, Law '48 (R, Fla.), who won in a close race. He will be the first Republican representative from his state since Reconstruction.
