A recent scholarship bequest in memory of a former Maine governor will provide $1,750 annually in aid to undergraduates who have lived or attended school in Maine.
Friends of the late William T. Gardiner '14, who died in an airplane accident a year ago, have set up a $85,000 trust fund and will donate the income to these scholarships.
Recipients of the awards will be chosen on the basis of "character, personality, and promise of future contribution to the community," according to the stipulations of the donors.
Gardiner served in two World Wars, as a Marine in the First and as an Air Force officer in the Second. He rose through the Maine state legislature to become governor from 1929 to 1933, but retired form politics to concentrate on investment banking.
As an undergraduate, Gardiner was an outstanding athlete and president of his class. Among his classmates were former President Conant and Senator Leverett Saltonstall.
