An outstanding Crimson halfback named Jim Damis impressed everyone at the jayvee football team's opener on Soldiers Field yesterday, but he wasn't enough to prevent the Crimson squad from losing to Brown, 14 to 0, on two first period touchdowns.
Damis is a 155-pound sophomore form Portland, Oregon, who missed more than half of last year's grid season because of an injury. He finally did get to run three plays with the '53 freshman B-team, however, and managed to score two touchdowns in the process. He was not invited back for early practice with the varsity this fall, and thus has been playing for only two weeks.
But yesterday, in the words of jayvee coach Norm Shepard, Damis was "both offensively and defensively the best man on the field."
Despite Damis' excellent performance, however, and despite the efforts of track captain Bob Rittenburg, who played 15 minutes at fullback but got little chance to carry the ball, the Crimson squad succumbed to inexperience and poor coordination. It was the players' first scrimmage against a T-formation attack, and their blocking especially showed the effects of inadequate preparation.
