Cambridge Teenager Caught Rifling Car in Alley Behind Winthrop House

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

A Cambridge youth was apprehended last night in Fender Alley behind Winthrop House, rifling a parked car.

Lou Dellera, 2nd Class airman at Bedford Airport, had parked his pink 1952 Ford in the alley at approximately 10:30 p.m., on his way home from a hunting trip. Dellera returned 20 minutes later, after taking a walk along the Charles with a girl friend and her collie dog, who had been with him in the car.

As he reached for the door handle, a youth, apparently stationed as a lookout, fled from the front of the car. Dellera spotted a partner lying on the front seat, rifling the glove compartment. Quickly pinning him under the flexible front seat of the coupe, Dellera reached for his 30-30 hunting rifle, which was lying on the back seat.

Led at Gun Point

Dellera then led the 18 year old youth at gun point into the Winthrop House superintendent's office in G entry, where University and Cambridge police were called to question him.

The youth is being held at the Cambridge police department, where charges of attempted larceny and possession of a switch blade knife will probably be made against him. Cambridge police officers Lee O. Davenport and William Killion made the arrest.

The youth already had a watch in his hand, taken from the glove compartment, and the girl's cigarette lighter in his pocket when Dellera caught him.

An old Ford, which the teen-agers had parked directly behind Dellera's car, is being watched by the police.

Last night Dellera did not intend to press charges against the boy. But the youth's name did reach the police blotter.

This is the second incident involving town boys this week. Last Wednesday night Alan J. Zuch '56 was beaten and robbed behind Eliot House.

Also, two days ago, Cambridge youths broke into Harkness Commons and stole cigarettes and money from the newsstand.
