With an all-American captain at forward but a puzzling season's record, Amherst faces the varsity soccer team at 2 p.m. today on the Business School field. If the Crimson, whose mark is now 3-2 wins, it will have won as many games as it did all last year.
What is puzzling about the Lord Jeff 3-1-1 record is their comparative record against common opponents. Amherst shut out Wesleyan, a team that beat the Crimson 2 to 0. But a weak Tech team, beaten by the varsity 4 to 1, held the Jeffs to a 1 to 1 tie. The other common opponent, Dartmouth beat both teams by two goals.
All-Americans forward Dick Fisher and his co-captain, Hal Seward, lead a strong defensive Amherst team. In five games the Jeffs have allowed an average of one goal a game. All three Amherst victories were shut-outs.
The Crimson, off to a better start than last year, is suffering from the same complaint, injuries, that has plagued Munro's teams for years. Grey Hodnett, the team's leading scorer, who is tied for fourth in the new England Intercollegiate League with four goals, missed most of the Dartmouth and Tech games, and may see no more than limited duty today.
Fullback John Hadik injured his back against Tech and may not even dress. Dick Fisher is still out with an ankle sprain, and Mauricio Toro and Marv Welss, inside left and right, and Stacey Holmes, center half, are all hampered by leg injuries.
If Hadik is out, Munro will switch Toro or Weiss back, and put either Godfrey Truslow or Chuck McVeagh in the forward line.
Despite injuries, Munro has been fortunate in that men like Toro and Weiss are versatile enough to fill in at other starting positions.
The varsity's next game will be with Trinity next Wednesday. Trinity has lost only to Yale, by a 2 to 1 score.
The Yardling's without injured Shad Tubman, play at Andover Academy this afternoon.
